Search Engine Optimization was once an easy thing to manipulate back in the day. But today it has become more of an Art or Science to achieve the Top Ten on Google. More importantly, getting to the number one spot is the biggest goal and it can be done. The secret is in the niche and the keyword phrases.
So lets carve out a niche as an example; I will use "Web Design". Now this is a huge market. In fact, Google reports over 202 million web pages. Knowing that this is a huge market I also know that it would be virtually impossible to break into the Top Ten so i need to find a niche.
If I do a Google search of my local city "Lynchburg" I see around 6 million web pages. That is a lot lower than 202 million but what if I combine the two$%: When I start another search on "Lynchburg Web Design" it returns 288 web pages. Now I am enclosing my search terms in quotes to get these numbers. If I repeat the search again without the quotes I get 724 thousand.

That is perfect for what I want and here is why.
Without the quotes my site is sitting at the number 6 spot. I have made it to the Top Ten; yes my goal has been attained for the 724 thousand web pages. But what about the other 288 web pages$%: Well, I am sitting at the number 6 position again. I would love to be at the number one spot for my keyword but that may take a little more time.
